Kate Watkins

Kate Watkins is a Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at the Department of Experimental Psychology at the University of Oxford and Tutorial Fellow in Psychology at St. Anne’s College. She completed her Bachelor’s at Christ’s College, Cambridge University in Natural Sciences. She then completed a Master’s and PhD at University College London where she used imaging and neuropsychology to investigate the KE family half of whom are affected by a mutation in the gene FOXP2 and have verbal dyspraxia. She did postdoctoral training at the Montreal Neurological Institute using brain stimulation and brain imaging to study the speech motor system. Since 2003 she has worked in Oxford using MRI to study the neural correlates of developmental stuttering revealing differences in brain structure and function in the brains of people who stutter. Her recent work uses brain stimulation to promote fluency enhancing techniques in people who stutter. She is also using MRI to examine movements in the vocal tract during perceptually fluent and dysfluent speech. Her other projects use imaging to study children with developmental language disorder and how language is organized in the brains of people who have been blind since birth.
